By now you’ve probably heard the phrase that we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the bottom of the ocean. In fact, more humans have walked on the surface of the moon than have reached the deepest parts of the ocean floor (the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench of the Pacific Ocean). To be honest, only 4 descents have ever been achieved in this nearly 11km deep hole in the ocean floor. Well, it may sound stupid, but for one thing, we can actually see the moon from Earth. Yes, at a very fundamental level, it is cheaper and simpler to study the surface of the moon than the bottom of the ocean. Galileo could easily examine the stars and map the surface of the moon. Examine underwater volcanos and map the bottom of the ocean? Not so much. It’s simply a matter of accessibility.
