The judge knew that Sgt. Joseph Serna had been through a lot.

The former Special Forces soldier did four combat tours in Afghanistan over a nearly two-decades-long career with the U.S. Army. Through those years, the Fayetteville Observer reported, Serna was almost killed three times: once, by a roadside bomb, then again by a suicide bomber.

During a tour in 2008, Serna and three other soldiers were driving down a narrow dirt road in Kandahar when their armored truck toppled into a canal, the Associated Press reported. As water filled the vehicle, Serna struggled to escape. (Click on the title to read the full article)

The Hubble Space Telescope’s 26th birthday is coming up, and NASA is celebrating the day with a doozy of a video that shows an enormous space balloon.

A series of images taken by Hubble shows a super-hot star blowing a massive bubble in space. Nicknamed the “Bubble Nebula,” it spans about 7 light-years across. The star creating the bubble is about 45 times the mass of our sun. (Click on the title to read the full article)

INDEPENDENCEDAY

London Bridge has well and truly fallen down in the new Independence Day: Resurgence trailer. It looks like the city — which has frequently been nuked, crashed onto, and otherwise trashed on the big screen — will receive its most fiery beating yet in the Independence Day sequel. In fact, it seems like it has a fairly major collision with cities that are usually thousands of miles away.

But that’s not all. The trailer also treats us to more glimpses of the post-alien invasion Earth, including (potentially) the demise of one of the original film’s main characters, and the (Click on the title to read the full article).

Three decades ago, the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger was one of the biggest stories of the year. But that year also saw hearings in the Iran-Contra affair, the re-opening of the Statue of Liberty after a long renovation, the fall of President Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines, and the crash of Aeromexico Flight 498 above Los Angeles. Photographers were also busy documenting the lives of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Joan Jett, Spike Lee, Halle Berry, Mike Tyson, and many others. Climatechange

The delegations of 175 countries gathered at the U.N. headquarters in New York City Friday, Earth Day, to sign the Paris Agreement on climate change. Here’s a quick primer on what it is, who’s signing, and why it’s important.
What is it?
An international agreement to bring down pollution levels (carbon emissions), which in turn would slow global warming and prevent disastrous environmental outcomes. It’s name comes from the city where the negotiations took place in Dec. 2014.
The agreement’s goal is to keep “the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees C above pre-industrial levels.”
The 1.5 degrees Celsius level was pushed hard by small, low-lying island nations, which (Click the title to read the full article).
