Exclusive - Gordon Opposed Trillanes in Senate Hearing, Blocks Privilege Speech!

Senator Richard Gordon opposed the referral of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV's privilege speech last Monday to the Blue Ribbon committee on which he chairs.

Gordon, the current chair of the Senate justice committee, told Trillanes for defending Edgar Matobato and using harsh words against Duterte.

“I believe it is a slur to the committee because we’ve tried to be very, very fair. I find it very distasteful that he was talking for the witness. The witness is the best witness. You cannot supplant a witness with your own observations,” he said.

“Harsh words such as mass murderer is uncalled for. That is reserved for Hitler; that is reserved for Stalin, that is reserved for the president of Cambodia, Pol Pot,” Gordon added.

Trillanes sought an investigation on the alleged direct involvement of Duterte on the extrajudicial killings in Davao City on his term as mayor.

Trillanes raised the matter during his privilege speech where he presented documents to dispute the statements of his co-senators that Matobato, a confessed member of the Davao Death Squad, was inconsistent in the stories he presented.

“We are faced with a very frightening prospect, that of having a mass murderer as president of the country,” Trillanes said. “I am sure that prior to this inquiry, all of us have heard rumors of the Davao Death Squad and that Duterte was somehow behind it ... but we were able to look the other way because it was convenient for us to do so. All that has changed.”
