President Rodrigo Duterte believes that Philippines and Japan is "closer than brothers" in their joint statement last Wednesday.
"Japan's official development assistance for the Philippines is second to none," Duterte said.
Duterte described his trip as "defining moment in solid, strategic partnership between the two countries." He had nothing but kind words to Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
He also mentioned various aspects of the agreement including respect for the rule of law, respect for basic human rights, and a free and open economy.
The two leaders also had a discussion on cooperation to maintain regional peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and the importance of a rules-based approach to the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes.
Duterte also thanked Japan for providing high-speed boats and other equipment to improve the Philippines' anti-terrorism actions and the move of a TC-90s training aircraft.
Abe accepted an offer from Duterte to visit the Philippines at his convenient time, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
