Senator Leila De Lima has been facing accusations that she had been linked to the illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison. Following the revelation of president Duterte about her driver-lover who allegedly collects money for De Lima, the Justice Secretary then revealed that six inmates would be testifying against De Lima. This compelled the House of Representatives to investigate the truth in these allegations.
However, De Lima opted to attend a Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) event for Eucharistic celebration instead of participating in the ongoing hearing in the House of representatives. The mass was in commemoration of the World Day Against Death Penalty. She arrived with some officials of the Commission on Human Rights.
She was also reportedly emotional in some parts of the mass.
