Holiday Shopping has become a hot topic in the last few years. Some people are very offended that stores would be open on Thanksgiving, and some are more than happy to skip pie with their third cousins to go shopping. People have very serious feelings about, er, buying stuff.
If you are a person, like many, who is kind of amazed that people want to leave their families on Thanksgiving – a day of rest, reflection, and gratitude – to go shopping, and wish to avoid stores that encourage this, or, if you are a person, like many, who wants an excuse to leave the madness of a family gathering – a day of cooking, dishes, and reminders of why we only see some people once a year – and wish to know which stores will or won’t be open so you have someplace to go, here’s a list of 25 Stores That Might Surprise You To Know Are Closed On Thanksgiving.

Costco

Costco has a well deserved reputation for treating it’s employees well, even if it costs them a little more. To add to this, they do not, and never have, opened on Thanksgiving because Thanksgiving is a time for Family. In fact, Costco has more “closed” store holidays than almost any retail chain store.

While Toys R Us will probably be open on Thanksgiving evening – they have in years past, and there have been stories of craziness – Babies R Us will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and open on Black Friday so you can Buy All The Baby Things!

Tractor Supply Company will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, which is no surprise considering that most of it’s shoppers are more rural and country folks who are somewhat less likely to be skipping pie with the family to save ten bucks on a toaster.

Barnes & Noble will be closed on Thanksgiving Day but likely open early on Black Friday. If this is a for sure stop on your Black Friday craziness (it should be, they have coffee and baked goods, as well as you know..stuff), call ahead to check for hours.

Williams Sonoma, which is where you buy stocking suffers and Christmas gifts for the cook or foodie in your family, is CLOSED on Thanksgiving day. That’s ALL locations, so even if your local mall is open, WS won’t be.

DSW Shoe Warehouse announced on it’s FB page that stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, so you can cool your heels and wait for them to open at 5 am on Black Friday. (Get it? Cool your heels? I’ll see myself out….)

The Mall of America in MN, the largest mall in the US, will be closed on Thanksgiving day. While some stores may individually decide to open (Macy’s, we’re looking at you), the mall as a whole ain’t havin’ none of that this year.

This should go without saying since they’re closed one day a week anyway, but Chick Fil A will NOT be open on Thanksgiving. While other drive thru restaurants may be with limited hours – Starbucks, McDonald’s – if you’re leaving to shop Thanksgiving evening and craving a sweet tea, you’ll be disappointed. (Unless you buy a gallon the day before…then you have some for Thanksgiving!)

Nordstrom is not only closed on Thanksgiving, they famously don’t decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. They usually post up signs saying something like, “We enjoy celebrating one Holiday at time.” While this does mean some employees inevitably end up coming in to decorate on Thanksgiving Day, it’s a far cry from places like Macy’s, who open their doors at 6pm on Thanksgiving.
