Rocky Gonzales, a self-proclaimed passionate and opinionated chronicler of socio-political events, shared his take on Philippine mainstream media, saying it's slowly dying.
"They kill good brain cells to put out bad news reports." he said according to the beginning of his article about the "Death of Mainstream Media."
He made comments about our current state of media reporting and journalism whereas the situation we're all in and the way mainstream media responds to them.
"This practice has long been forgotten by mainstream media. Their one-sided, partisan politicking, fabricated and decontextualized reports have hammered the nail in their proverbial coffin. What makes mainstream media relevant in society is the trust the public gives them. Without it, they are a superfluous and nuisance part of daily life as much as waking up to your own bad breath."
Gonzales criticized the process of news reporting on its desperate attempts to catch and influence the attention of its audience.
"It has sunk to such depths as creating click-bait headlines which are not based on its content, rallying support in the halls of the senate to suppress social media, and posturing as the bastion of truth and sole purveyor of facts."
He also stressed the impact of social media on today's journalism.
"The difference now is that when journalists have to go the extra mile to find the meaning of economic news, economists readily post their interpretations online. When journalists have to prepare before they deliver sports news from an athletic paradigm, athletes immediately give their reactions online. In politics, arts, literature, trade, diplomacy and commerce, specialists respond more quickly and comprehensively than journalists."
Online journalism marks the death of mainstream media, continually lurking its mass audience into relying on social media alone.
"Thus, the expiration of mainstream journalism began. Just like a week old dairy product left in the refrigerator, mainstream media reports started to curdle and spoil," he said.
"In a hopeless battle against the tides of technology, mainstream media is waning in influence and relevance."
