Thousands of black birds have migrated near the coastline of Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates in search of food and comfort from the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf.

The black birds spotted are called the great cormorant, from the species of “Phalacrocorax carbo”. Great cormorants are big black birds that feeds in the sea.

According to Dr. Saif Al Ghais, Executive Director of Ras Al Khaimah’s Environment Protection and Development Authority, the UAE has been always been a stopover for thousands of birds during the winter migration period because of its warm climate.

Every winter season, most birds tend to migrate to any coast that is rich in fish. Great cormorants feed in shallow water. 

Winter is also the time when great cormorants breed; mostly along the coast or sometimes in trees near sea water. Female cormorants lay about three to five eggs, pale blue-green in color.
