Sen. Leila De Lima urged the senate to consider President Rodrigo Duterte as the protector of top drug lords in the country.
On a statement she made on Saturday, the senator called for an inquiry session that will investigate Duterte's possible involvement in protecting drug lords.
De Lima's speculations followed Duterte's admission that he is the one who ordered the reinstatement of Supt. Marvin Marcos, the leader of the police raid that killed suspected Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., as head of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Region 8.
De Lima claimed that his admission "brought more questions than answers".
"We must start asking ourselves this question: whether or not the President, rather than De Lima, is actually the number one drug lord protector and coddler in the country," De Lima said.
President Duterte admitted that he made the call to contradict De Lima's initial claim that it was the Presidential Management Staff head Bong Go who called for the reinstatement.
"Just as I thought. Since, per my source, it's Bong Go who called PNP Chief Bato, then it must be the President who, directly or indirectly through Bong Go, gave such an order to reinstate Marcos. I guess the President had no choice but to own it up instead of letting Bong Go, his closest aide, trusted confidant, and all around go-to guy, to be the fall guy in this incident," De Lima said.
The senator is accusing the president of having a deeper reason behind his order of Marcos' reinstatement. In addition, she is also keeping an eye on the controversy when PNP Chief Dela Rosa said that it was a "higher official" and a "kumpare" who ordered the reinstatement. De Lima said that it puzzles her why General Bato did not directly admit that it was the President.
De Lima has been repeatedly alleged to be linked to the illegal drug trade in New Bilibid Prison and has been subjected to multiple inquiries by the House of the Representatives.
