In an interview with Belgian magazine Tertio, Pope Francis compared the media's interest in scandals to coprophilia – a morbid obsession with feces.
The interview, wherein the Holy Father warned of the evil found in this form of news, was published on Wednesday.
Coprophilia is a medical term for an abnormal (often sexual) interest in excrement or feces.
"The media should be very clear, very transparent, and not fall prey ... to the sickness of coprophilia, which is always wanting to communicate scandal, to communicate ugly things, even though they may be true" the Pope said in his native language Spanish.
Pope Francis excused himself after using what he felt was disgusting imagery.
Pope Francis warned that people who willingly indulge in scandalous news were engaged in "coprophagia" (the consumption of feces.) Further in the interview, the Pope also described slander and defamation as sinful.
This wouldn't be the first time Pope Francis would use these shocking metaphors. He used the same argument before he was elected pope in 2013.
"Disinformation is probably the greatest damage that the media can do," Pope Francis warned.
