Exclusive - Star Wars Star 'Princess Leia' Carrie Fisher Passes Away At Age 60

Carrie Fisher, best known as the iconic Princess Leia in the popular Star Wars franchise, has passed away at the age of 60.

Family spokesperson Simon Halls confirmed the news to PEOPLE magazine.

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” Halls said in a statement.

She suffered a heart attack during a flight from London to Los Angeles last December 23 where the plane had an emergency landing. Medics took her to the nearest hospital.

Fisher enrolled in the Central School of Speech and Drama in London in 1973 where she spent a year studying and harnessing her acting skills.

Two years after, Hollywood took notice of her acting skills and gave her film debut in the film Shampoo starring Warren Beatty.

At age 19, George Lucas hired her to be one of the leads in his film called Star Wars. Little did she know, this would establish her name in every American household as Princess Leia, the leader of the Rebel Alliance aiming to end the tyranny of the Empire lead by Darth Vader.

Princess Leia is often described as the strong female damsel who can solve her own distress.

After the original trilogy, Fisher reprised her role in last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, together with the original cast members Mark Hammill (Luke Skywalker) and Harrison Ford (Hans Solo). She will be seen again posthumously in next year's Star Wars Episode VIII.

Fisher also appeared in various TV shows and movies like When Harry Met Sally, Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters, Sex and the City, and 30 Rock. Prior to her death, she has a recurring role in Seth MacFarlene's animated series Family Guy.

She also has skills beyond the screen. Fisher established her name as a novelist and memoirist, publishing such books Postcards from the Edge, Wishful Drinking, and recently, The Princess Diarist.

She was survived by her parent Debbie Reynolds, Lourd, and her dog.
