Exclusive - After Gloria Diaz Criticized Maxine Medina, Did the 1969 Miss Universe Really Impress in Her Q&A Portion? Must Watch!

The first ever Filipina to win the Miss Universe crown, Miss Gloria Diaz, made headlines weeks before the 65th Miss Universe coronation night because of her strong recommendation for Miss Philippines Maxine Medina to get her own interpreter.

In a news report released by ABS-CBN, the 1969 Miss Universe insisted that Maxine should express her answer for the pageant's Q&A round in her own vernacular language. She also claimed that speaking in Filipino during the pageant's Q&A portion will not make her any less of a beauty queen.

"This is the first time I will meet Maxine and the first thing I will tell her is to get an interpreter if she feels that she can better express her thoughts using our vernacular language. She is a Filipina and I don’t think it will make her less of a beauty queen if she will decide to use our language on the grand coronation," Diaz sad through a social media post.

Gloria received criticism when she claimed that Maxine only had a one-in-a-million chance of winning the prestigious pageant. In an interview with ABS-CBN News' Marie Lozano, the former beauty queen shared her opinions as to why she thought Maxine would not be crowned the victor.

It turns out she was right.

Her statements drew the ire of many netizens. Some of them couldn't help but scrutinize Diaz's answer in her own Q&A portion in the 1969 Miss Universe.

Kung makapagsalita akala mo ang ganda ng sagot niya during final Q and A"

Jhastine Diaz: "Yung panahon nga niya, walang kwenta sagot niya e. Makapagjudge na feeling expert"

Gloria's comments on Maxine urged many netizens to look back at how she herself handled her own Q&A round in 1969.

Back when the pageant's production was still relatively simple and when the stage was less grandiose, the questions were decidedly less political.

The Top 5 finalists were asked: "In the next day or so, a man will land on the moon. If a man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?"

Diaz' winning answer was very direct and simple. She said: "Oh, just the same things I do. I think if he has been on the moon for so long, I think when he comes over he wants to change, I guess."

At the time, her plainly specific answer was enough for the judges to hail her the victor.

However, Diaz's victory was followed by controversy as rumors of the pageant being rigged in favor of the Philippines started to spread.

In a blog post written by globalbeauties.com, some people considered it a political victory. Because the Philippines was unhappy about their participation in the Vietnam War, the USA reportedly used the 1969 Miss Universe victory to calm Filipinos.

The post also noted that the 1969 Miss Universe was not a hot topic when it happened as people were more focused on the news about Apollo 11, the shuttle that carried the first men to the moon.
