After almost 12 years, the prestigious Miss Universe pageant is once again being hosted by the Philippines. This is mainly due to the efforts by the reigning Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach, who gave the Philippines a stunning victory in 2015.
This year, the Philippines will be represented by Maxine Medina, a Filipino designer and model.
With only a few weeks before the pageant, Maxine has been preparing intensely. She has been training both her mind and her body since winning the ‘Binibining Pilipinas’. She has been doing a lot of interviews to get ready for the pageant. In one of her interviews, she was asked about her advocacy.
Although she was able to relay her advocacies – namely to raise awareness regarding HIV and inspire young girls who aspire to achieve big things in the future – many netizens noticed how she struggled to construct her answer. Her fluency with the English language was also called into question by some, who said that she lacked training, sincerity and conviction.
One of the netizens suggested that she should just speak in Tagalog so she can better express thoughts. Most of the comments agreed that she lacked communication skills.
