An episode of ABS-CBN's 'Ipaglaban Mo' sent the social media community buzzing after it featured the story of a young boy who experienced sexual harassment from his fraternity leader.
The afternoon program, which shows dramatization of actual cases in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, relayed the story of Jay-R, a 14-year old boy who joined a "brotherhood" and experienced multiple forms of abuse and harassment. In a clip released by ABS-CBN, Mon, the fraternity leader, took advantage of Jay-R's unconscious mind and took advantage of him. Because of being drunk, Jay-R and his colleagues failed to resist Mon's abusive acts.
The clip garnered various reactions from netizens who tried to analyze the segment. Some of them commended the program in the comment sections for their advocacy in bringing awareness to their viewers. They also praised the program's attempt to vividly describe what happens when a young adult is surrounded by wrong choice of friends.
One of the top comments said:
"Awareness po ang gusto iparating ng show, na kahit lalaki pwedeng magsampa ng kaso na rape at hindi lang ang mga kababaihan ang nakakaranas neto. Minsan kasi tignan natin yung message behind it kesa salita tayo ng salita, nagmumukha lang tayong mangmang." Emil Louie G. Umipig wrote.
However, the program failed to escape criticism as netizens questioned its depiction of obscene sexual imagery. Some of them condemn the network for showcasing "immorality and indecency."
Law Mendoza wrote: "Anong kalaswaan tong pinapalabas ng ABS. Sabagay puro bakla naman mga lalaking artista nila. Kaya normal lang sa kanila ang ganyang kabaklaan."
While majority of the netizens engaged in the discussion analyzed the context and message of the episode, some of them noticed the style and content of the program. A netizen appreciated the cinematography used and the acting skills of the characters who played challenging roles.
Ex-Pinoy Big Brother housemate, Yves Flores, played the character of Jay-R and indie film actor, Kiko Matos, played the role of Mon. Both shared how difficult it was for them to act for this particular project.
