A newly-constructed hanging bridge is changing the lives of students living in two barangays in Bukidnon.
On December 23, 2016, a hanging bridge was formally opened for public use after videos of the students crossing the dangerous waters became viral.
Soon the story was reported by ABS-CBN's TV Patrol and was brought to the attention of the Department of Public Works and Highways. The DPWH then ordered the construction of the bridge to help address the problems facing the children.
According to ABS-CBN, pre-teens Cheryl and Mylene Baang used to take this dangerous route. Cheryl would recall their experiences without the bridge. Their mother would carry her sister on her back while climbing the side of the cliff, just to get both girls to school.
She did this just so her children could have an education.
Since the opening of the bridge, children from Barangay Lingating in Baungon, Bukidnon can now travel in relative safety. No longer are they bound to using bamboo rafts and kilometer long hikes to get to their schools in Barangay Bayanga in Cagayan de Oro.
Principals from the schools are now anticipating an influx of new students from these previously isolated communities.
How inspiring!
