When faced with someone experiencing a life-threatening emergency, what would you do? Would you help the person out at the risk of suffering the same fate, or would you take photos and post them on social media?

These bystanders in Thailand chose the latter.

When an allegedly drunk man fell into a river, bystanders around him were quick to act – by taking photos and posting them online. Nobody bothered to help him as he struggled to reach safety, the bystanders opted to document his suffering instead.

At the height of apathy, some even wrote: “How can he fall? Haha.”

Due to the crowd’s inaction, the man drowned to death. When the police arrived on the scene, the bystanders were still intent on capturing his demise.

"Please stop photo shooting and respect the dead." The cops said.

How could something like this happen? There’s a scientific explanation to this phenomenon called the ‘Bystander Effect’.

The Bystander Effect states that the chances of individuals helping someone out during an emergency decrease when others are present. The more bystanders there are, the lower the odds of anyone trying to help out. This is due to the expectation that someone else will help, which leads to virtually nobody choosing to do so.
