An English teacher working at Thomas J. Stovall Middle School caught the attention of the social media community with her controversial pregnancy as her 13-year old student is deemed responsible.
Alexandria Vera (24) was sentenced to 10 years in jail for sexually assaulting her 8th grader student who got her pregnant.
In November 2016, Vera was charged with aggravated assault of a child because she was sleeping with her 13-year old student. She pleaded guilty in order to avoid being imprisoned for life.
Vera's relationship with her 8th grade student bloomed during the summer classes of 2015. Their relationship lasted for months, according to dailymail.co.uk. According to the court papers released, both Vera and the boy claimed that they "had sex on a daily basis" and "[loved] each other". this resulted in Vera's pregnancy.
Reports claim that the boy's family approves the relationship. Vera claimed that the boy's parents were “supportive [of] and excited [by]” her pregnancy. They were aware of the ongoing relationship. Vera also claimed that the boy's family constantly invited her to family events.
Washingtonpost.com reported that Vera bought groceries for the boy’s family even paid for their phone bills. The Houston Chronicle reported that the teenager and his father moved into Vera's home and they pretended like she was dating the father in order to avoid suspicion.
However, due to the criticism from Child Protective Services, Vera had the child aborted. Vera's first daughter knew about the relationship and even called the teenage boy "daddy".
Vera was able to bail herself out for $100,000 and was ordered by the court to stay away from minors. She was also put on curfew between the hours of 8 pm and 7 am. The 13-year old boy was not allowed to see her until he turns 18.
Two months after she was initially charged with the sexual assault of a minor, the Houston Court already released their decision. Vera was required to serve 10 years in prison, replacing her initial 30-year sentence.
Judge Michael McSpadden of 209th District Court in Houston claimed that he "does not believe the former English teacher is a danger to children or a classic pedophile". The court found out that Vera is had mental health problems as she grew up surrounded by domestic violence.
