People were in awe when ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan,’ a singing competition in the noontime variety show ‘It’s Showtime,’ presented a blind balladeer who hailed from Bacolod City.
His name was Carl Malone Montecido and he has been dubbed “The Blind Balladeer”. This is because despite the fact that he cannot see, he can croon melodies and make ladies swoon with his songs.
ABS-CBN News reported that last November 2016, the balladeer failed to enter the automatic semifinals spot because Mark Las Piñas, a singer from Lanao del Norte, claimed his position by scoring an average of 92.4 percent.
Montecido, meanwhile, only scored an average of 91.6 when he sang a rendition of ‘The Wonder of You,’ originally performed by Elvis Presley. He was out of the competition after that, only winning a total amount of 120, 000 pesos.
Before his loss, Montecido won on the segment for a total of four days. He was only just one win away from moving on towards the next round of the competition.
Montecido also appeared in the first season of ‘Pilipinas Got Talent,’ where he was able to reach the semi-finals portion back when he was just eleven-years-old.
Drama anthology ‘Maalaala Mo Kaya’ also aired his own life story, where they featured his struggles in their December 31 episode on 2016.
Many people were inspired and touched by Montecido’s story and Filipinos abroad also lauded and supported the blind balladeer. This could be evidenced by the thousands of encouraging messages he received in ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan Online.’
However, in the February 18 episode of the ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan’ segment, Montecido once again wowed the judges when he finally secured his own spot in the Quarter 4 semi-finals.
