Losing the only daughter you have because of other people's selfish actions is probably the most painful thing a parent could experience.
This statement echoed by Linda Trevan who lost her daughter, Cassidy a.k.a. Cass, on December 22, 2015. Cass committed suicide due to the severe mental trauma she suffered from intense bullying and being gang-raped.
According to Linda, Cass was only 13 years old when she was first bullied in the high school she was attending in Melbourne, Australia. Due to the intense bullying, Cass was advised to stop attending her classes. Linda told 9 News in an interview that her daughter would often receive online verbal bashing and physical abuse from her bullies.
Cass' tormenters did not feel content from their verbal abuse. The little girl lost her innocence when she was gang-raped on February 15, 2014. Cass' tormentors fooled her into thinking they were befriending her when she returned to school. They gave her their fake apologies and got close to her in order to execute their sick plan. They invited her to a festival, but instead of witnessing a feast, Cass was feasted upon.
According to Linda's narration, two girls led Cass to a room where two older guys "shared her and timed each other". While the two girls waited, another boy acted as their look-out.
Cass suffered from serious psychological trauma for 22 months after the incident happened. Linda tried to transfer her to another school but her offenders continued to bash her online. Linda recalled that Cass' main bully physically assaulted her at a shop once. They were also able to verbally abuse her through social media after the sexual assault.
Linda and Cassidy sought the help of Vitoria's police under the Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) but Cass chose not to file any charges and formal complaints because she feared retaliation from her bullies.
It seemed like Cass could no longer take all the pain she was experiencing so she decided to take her own life at the tender age of 15 on December 22, 2015.
Linda was deeply distressed by what happened and decided to post a heartbreaking message on her Facebook account with the post title that said: "BULLYING KILLED MY CHILD."
Following Linda's post, the Victorian Department of Education administrators also released their statement regarding the incident.
"The death of any young person is an absolute tragedy and our sympathies re with Cassidy's family. Schools have a range of ways to help students who may be experiencing bullying or mental health issues, including by providing qualified counselors. School staff work hard to identify and support students who need support and we would encourage any students who need help to talk to staff at their school.”
