After consecutive earthquakes hit the southern part of the Philippines, an article declaring the upcoming impact of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake has been circulating online causing netizens to worry about its possibility.
In less than a month, Philippine social media was filled with headlines regarding the earthquakes which struck Surigao City, Davao City and Compostella Valley. The successive disasters sent Filipinos in a state of panic.
PHIVOLCS has warned of the possibility of the coming of the 'Big One', a predicted 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
Following the PHIVOLCS warning, an article claiming that it could accurately predict when the 'Big One' will hit went viral. The article claimed that the 'Big One' will hit the country between February 24-March 8, 2017.
Although the source of the article was not verified, it still dominated social media as netizens panicked over the information.
The article generated a lot of buzz, so much so that it has come to the attention of PHIVOLCS. The government agency then released a public service announcement stating that the article's prediction for when the 'Big One' will hit is not confirmed and has no basis.
According to PHIVOLCS, the time and location as to when and where an earthquake will hit cannot be accurately predicted. Hence, the claim that the predicted 7.2 magnitude earthquake will strike the country during the aforementioned dates is baseless and unverified.
Scientifically speaking, there is still no device that has been invented to accurately predict the occurrence of an earthquake. The agency then placed emphasis on being prepared all the time for natural calamities as they are unpredictable.
