Another inspiring story that melts the hearts of netizens is the life of Meriam Libongcogon, a graduating student from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). The Cadet 1st Class is set to attend her graduating ceremony on Sunday, March 12.
The 25-year-old Cebuana shared with ABS-CBN News how she struggled to finish her education. According to her, she was born into a simple life in Bambalan, Cebu with her parents and six siblings before she decided to study in Baguio.
ABS-CBN reported that Libongcogon's father is a carpenter and farmer while her mother took care of them at home.
By the age of 6, she started working on their farm to help her father sustain their needs. She said that they would eat anything that made its way on to their table, this included boiled bananas and sweet potatoes,, and that was on a good day. There were more unfortunate days when there was nothing to eat.
Libongcogon also shared that when she was 9 years old, she found work supplying materials to construction workers in their town such as coconut shells, wood and sand. The money she earned from doing this was spent on the materials they needed to sew their own clothes.
Despite their unfortunate situation, she still graduated as the class valedictorian in their local elementary school. This gave her the opportunity to study at a Catholic school with a full scholarship. She stayed in Cebu until her college days. Because of the high cost of tuition for her Computer Engineering course, she was forced to work as a housemaid in Cebu City. She funded her own education hoping she could finish and achieve her dreams.
The condition of her health hindered her education. She failed to balance her studies and job and found it difficult to juggle her duties, because of this, she was forced to stop college.
She continued working as a housemaid for three years and later went to Baguio City and met Nanay Rose who stood as her foster parent. Nanay Rose suggested Libongcogon enroll in the PMA. She helped Libongcogon acquire the requirements and credentials. Nanay Rose became a major part of Libongcogon's journey because it was through her that the Cebuana housemaid realized her dreams.
"Ginamit po ni Lord yung mga nakilala ko sa pagkakatulong para makapag-aral dito sa PMA. Tinanong po nila kung ano yung grade ko. Tapos tumulong po sila na kunin yung credentials ko sa Cebu," Libingcogon shared.
Libongcogon's previous struggles and hardships in her life made her strong and gave her the will to carry on with her life. Now that she has graduated from the military school, there are many things in store for her future.
According to ABS-CBN News, the Cadet who dreams of building a house for her parents, will enter the Philippine Navy to render her Military service.
