Jaya is known as one of the Philippines’ soul music singers who can belt out tunes in such a powerful voice that could only be rivaled by perhaps Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston.
The Jamaica-born singer was the first Filipino singer to have a song that included in the US Billboard Hot 100. Her debut single ‘If You Leave Me Now’ peaked at 44 out of 100 songs.
In 2013, she became a judge in GMA’s musical variety show ‘Sunday All Stars,’ which she was part of along with Regine Velasquez, Janno Gibbs, and Ogie Alcasid.
Just like all famous singers, Jaya was also able to mentor people. One of her most famous mentors was Lovely Embuscado, who was touted ‘The Singing Cinderella’ in the first season of ‘Protégé,’ an over-all talent competition that aired in GMA in 2011.
The program aimed to discover new celebrities in the country through a series of nationwide auditions. Its tagline was “The battle for the big artista break.” It featured Eula Valdez and Joey de Leon as two of its six judges.
In season one, Embuscado was tapped the official protégé of singer Jaya. According to Embuscado, her singing career began when she used to sang to her pet pigs. When the show aired, she was just 12-years-old.
She grew up in Tagum, Davao and auditioned at SM City Davao in front of Jaya with the song ‘Then You Look at Me,’ which was originally performed by Celine Dion. In the face-off round of the show, Embuscado was able to sing ‘Hurt,’ which made her advance towards the finals.
By 2011, Embuscado was eliminated but she came back because of the wildcard round. She emerged as ‘Protégé’s’ runner-up in the first season, together with Lirah Bermudez.
Recently, though, in a footage released by Lorevie Palomares Legario on Facebook, the once-famous mentor of Jaya was featured singing, but this time, with a rather alarming caption.
According to Legario, “Ang batang hinangaan at gumagawa na ng sariling pangalan sa showbiz, ito na sya ngayon. Mensa'y na wawala ito sa katinuan dahil sa depression na pinagdadaanan nito.”
She continued: “PLEASE Paki share, Tag, Mention nyo ng makarating o makita ito ni Jaya para muli nyang tulongan ang dating alaga. Andito po sya ngayon sa BLK 4 NEWSITE BASECO PORT AREA MANILA.”
She hashtagged the post with #OneClickForLovelyEmbuscado and #KapusoMoJessicaSoho.
Many netizens commented that she still hasn’t lost her voice, with user Ailinne Isidro saying: “Such a talent!!!” with three clapping emojis.
Even though it was not evident in the video that she was undergoing depression, others relayed their concerns through their comments and wondered what had happened to her.
