Vietnam is the first country to take this regulation to the next level--by requiring their flight stewardesses to have a physically appealing body as well. Why? Because these girls wear bikinis as their onboard uniform.

The flight stewardesses work for VietJet, an international low-cost airline company from Vietnam. Its chief operations officer (CEO) is Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, who has pioneered the wearing of the red-and-yellow bikinis. 

According to Elite Readers, she just might be the “very first female billionaire in her country.” They cited Bloomberg, which touted Thao as Southeast Asia’s “first self-made woman.” 

The source said that Thao owns 95% of VietJet. Apart from that, she also owns Dragon City, a 65-hectare development in Ho Chi Minh. 

Forbes reported that she’s also the co-founder and chairperson of Sovico Holdings. Her net worth as of 2017 is 1.2 billion US dollars. 

In an interview, Thao said, “You have the right to wear anything you like either the bikini or the traditional ao dai.”

The concept was launched in 2011 and since then, the airline company was able to take more than 30% of the industry’s market share and reportedly continues to rise to this very day. This is because of VietJet’s initiative to use bikinis as their stewardesses’ uniforms. 

Apart from that, the flight stewardesses are also featured as calendar models. Thao added, “We don’t mind people associating the airline with the bikini image. If that makes people happy, then we are happy.” 

The airline company has been popular because it only recruits young flight attendants. The girls wear the red-and-yellow bikinis on their inaugural flights to beach locations. At the same time, they are featured on calendars with the same attire. 

Thao said that the bikinis empower the female staff in their otherwise conservative culture. Whether this sits well with feminists and other women, is yet another story to be discussed.
