A mother in Mexico accidentally killed her own children after they ate the breakfast she prepared.
In a story posted by naturalhealingmagazine.net, a woman named Josefina prepared the morning meal like she always does every day for her son Agustin and daughter Maria.
She was very strict in telling her children to wash their hands before eating, and so they did as they were told before they went to the dining table.
According to the story, Josefina was texting her husband while preparing the food, an act she would later regret.
The two kids then went to school. Everything seemed normal until she got a call from their campus saying that her two children were rushed to the hospital.
Josefina and her husband went to check on their children and were told that they were suffering from salmonella poisoning.
Agustin and Maria died due to the infection. But the biggest heartbreak was knowing that the two children were infected because of Josefina's mistake.
Doctors revealed that the salmonella bacteria may have come from her own hands when she touched her phone to text her husband while making breakfast.
While no other sources confirm this story to be true, it does give us a valuable lesson about hygiene.
Salmonella is one of the most prolific bacteria in our environment, causing about one million foodborne diseases in the United States alone.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 19,000 hospitalizations have been recorded in 2016 with 380 resulting in death. And this is a first-world country we are talking about.
Salmonella thrives almost anywhere and the mobile phones we use every day, everywhere may, under certain conditions, be perfect breeding grounds for the bacteria.
So remember, stay away from your phone while eating or preparing food. Refraining from using your phones at the dinner table will not only open more opportunities for conversations, but it might actually save lives.
