Somalia has been, for a long time, a place full of danger for seafarers. As strategic as it is, being the easternmost part of Africa, there are pirates left and right who are willing to risk their lives to earn a buck.
From looting to kidnapping seafarers for ransom, Somalia’s coastline is infamously being patrolled by pirates. From their rise in 2008 to 2011, plenty of cargo ships have developed ways of protecting their assets. One of the most known are private security contractors. Well, you probably know them by their other name, mercenaries.
These men risk their lives to protect the assets, the vessel, and, of course, the crew from harm.
In this viral video that was believed to be have taken back in 2012, you can see just how they fought. With pirates coming in fast with a couple of speedboats, they were quick to react with their submachine guns and made bullets rain on the pirates.
Here’s the full video:
Looks like terror has started to resurface though, as just last March, a group of Somali pirates hijacked the commercial ship, Aris 13.
Also, October last year, it was reported that 5 Filipino seamen were released by the pirates after they were in captivity for 4 years.
Going back to the video, netizens are lauding the mercenaries for their bravery.
