Julio Seth Graham Long only wanted to go home after he has finished his duty but an encounter with an old man begging under the overpass of Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong changed all that.
According to his Facebook post, he usually sees the old man--or as he calls him --“Tatay” around four to six in the evening on a daily basis.
The old man is actually Jeorge Cruz, a 63-year-old man with a towel on his head. Long asked Cruz as to why he was always under the overpass of Shaw, near the MRT tracks northbound.
Cruz answered that he’s begging for alms in order to pay for his medicine because he has a heart condition and has breathing difficulties. He also answered that he has kidney stones, which makes it hard for him to pee.
Long asked Cruz about his family and the place he lives in, to which the old man only said, “Nasunog po, sir.”
He mentioned that his wife, along with his two children, died in the fire.
Cruz narrated that after his family died in the fire, he was dazed and out of his mind for about three months. He was even admitted to a mental hospital for two months but was immediately relieved because a kind-hearted person helped him.
At that point, Long stated that he bowed his head because of overwhelming sadness and felt tears coming out of his eyes.
The old man continued that whenever he would go to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the staff there would always ask for his identification card, birth certificate, and a bunch of other papers or documents in order for him to have a check-up.
This angered Long, who said in his Facebook post, “Common sense! Nasunog nga diba!!! Shit that DSWD!!!”
