A teenage boy accidentally killed himself while on Instagram Live.
Malachi Hemphill, 13 years old, was posing with a gun while video streaming when he mistakenly pulled the trigger on his head.
Shaniqua Stephens was taking out the trash when she heard a loud bang.
"I couldn’t tell if it was a gunshot or what," she said. "I just knew that it was something that was wrong,” she added.
When she ran upstairs with her daughter, they found Malachi lying in a pool of blood.
"My daughter screamed and said, ‘Mom turn his phone off!' As I proceeded to look at his phone he was on Instagram Live,” Shaniqua narrated.
Malachi was taken to Grady Hospital and was declared dead on arrival. He is believed to have accidentally pulled the trigger when he tried to put a clip in it, as per request of one of the viewers.
Shaniqua said that "40 or 50" friends of Malachi turned up outside their house after the incident. She also believed these kids were watching his son live that's why they abruptly showed up in their front yard afterward.
Shaniqua had no idea how Malachi got a gun in the first place. The local police told her it was allegedly passed to him by a friend.
“The detective asked me yesterday, ‘What was Malachi’s Instagram name? [but] I couldn’t tell him what Malachi’s Instagram name was because he would make up so many different pages," Shaniqua said.
“Monitor their phones, just monitor your children. More now than anything,” she added.
Police arrived around 10:40 in the evening. She told them that it was a terrible accident and not a suicide.
“This is just a pain that will never go away," she said. "He was my only son. He was just only 13. Just the thought of me seeing him on the floor will never leave my brain."
