Brides in China have been hiring professional bridesmaids as weddings in the country have gone from bad to worse. Bridesmaids are forced into drinking excessively, and often sexually abused by the guests. Some are stripped of their clothes and are made fun of. It has been long embedded in their culture. However, following the death of a 28-year-old bridesmaid in Wenchang, Hainan province last September due to excessive alcohol, many chinese women were alarmed.
Many of them are afraid to share their traumatic experience due to differing levels of women empowerment in the country. In return, brides hire professional bridesmaid instead and it has been a rising profession in the country. They are paid between 200 yuan to 800 yuan depending on the level of 'difficulty'.
Meanwhile, this only serves as a temporary fix to the issue. Many women wish for the government to intervene on the matter.
