Oatmeal has become one of the staples in households because its quick and easy to make that is needed when one is rushing in the morning or just looking for a snack.
One of the most trusted brands of this product is Quaker Oats. However, things are turning a little sour for the company.
Consumers from New York and California have filed a lawsuit against Quaker Oats stating its advertising as “false, deceptive, and misleading.”
This rooted from their labels that says, “100% Natural Whole Grain” along with the text that read “Old-Fashioned.” Lewis Daly from Brooklyn, New York, has filed the lawsuit and says that a carcinogenic substance, glyphosate, is used to grow the oats and is sprayed on them during harvest.
The lawsuit, filed in Federal District Courts in New York and California, saying that there is nothing unlawful about Quaker Oats.
“What is unlawful is Quaker’s claim that Quaker Oats is something that it is not in order to capitalize on growing consumer demand for healthful, natural products.”
Quaker, which is owned by PepsiCo, says on its website that the oats used in its products are grown in an environmentally responsible way.
“Since oats require less herbicide spray than many other grains, there is less risk of pollutants and groundwater contamination,” it says.
While the level of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the popular weed killer Roundup, detected in the oatmeal falls well below the limit set by federal regulators for human consumption, the lawsuit is now demanding a cost of $5 million.
