Exclusive - Philippines First in ASEAN To Use Face Detectors In Immigration Counters To Watch For Wanted Passengers

Immigration counters in airports are now equipped with newly installed face detectors. These face detectors will be used to help catch passengers wanted by the authorities.

How does it work?

This devices, which was designed by Filipino programmers, scan for fake passports used by those coming in and out of the country.

When a passenger faces the immigration counter, the device will automatically match his face to the databases of various government branches.

These include the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Tourism, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and the International Police (INTERPOL).

Associate Commissioner Michael Robles, from the Bureau of Immigration, explained that these new features are part of an increased effort to combat human trafficking and terrorism.

Another benefit of these new security measures is the quick accessing of a passenger’s information. Quicker access to passenger information means shorter lines at the counters.
