Exclusive - Baguio Students Discover Gabi-Derived Fuel, Finds It To Be A Cleaner Alternative To Petroleum For Cars!

A cleaner and eco-friendly alternative fuel was discovered by students at St. Louis University in Baguio City

Last October, their taro-derived-biothanol fuel won the Business and Idea Development Award (BIDA) and was awarded by the Philippines Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Their award-winning biofuel invention is planned to be patented.

According to Gregory Lumboy, one of the researchers, wild gabi is a crop which has bio-ethanol that can also fuel cars.

"Wild gabi is an abundant yet inedible crop na rich sa carbohydrates and glucose, na kailangan sa bio-ethanol. Ang bio-ethanol, ito yung type ng gas na napapagana pa rin ang saskayan, but in a cleaner way," Lumboy said.

The students claim that they can extract the oil and ferment the wild taro for weeks. They dubbed their invention as "Bio-Gab"

Researcher Oji Tateoka said, "We collected the wild gabi kase kahit saan, tumutubo naman [ito]."

This invention is said to be eco-friendly as it is a cleaner alternative to other petroleum products commonly used in cars.
