Exclusive - Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz Tells Maxine Medina: Get an Interpreter!

Ever since Pia Wurtzbach won the much-coveted Miss Universe crown last year, people all over the world – especially Filipinos – were keeping track of the various potential candidates for the most prestigious beauty pageant in the world.
Gloria Diaz, the first Filipina who brought home the crown in 1969, said that Miss Universe bet Maxine Medina should get herself an interpreter if she truly wants to win the contest.
"This is the first time I will meet Maxine and the first thing I will tell her is to get an interpreter if she feels that she can better express her thoughts using our vernacular language," the former Miss Universe said.
Gloria recently attended the Governor's Ball held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. She stressed that speaking in Filipino during the pageant itself would not make her any less of a beauty queen.
According to Gloria, “[Maxine] is a Filipina and I don’t think it will make her less of a beauty queen if she will decide to use our language on the grand coronation.”
In an interview with People's Television Network (PTV), Gloria was asked about her thoughts on Maxine's chances of winning the pageant and following in Pia Wurtzbach's footsteps.
"No," she emphatically answered. "But I think she has a chance, and chance is one in a million."
Maxine's pageant trainer, Jonas Gaffud, mentioned that he is considering the possibility of getting an interpreter for Maxine.
Gaffud, who also trained Pia Wurtzbach, said:
"Ang sinasabi lang namin, kung ano ang nasa puso niya, sabihin niya. So ngayon kung kakailanganin niya para mas ma-convey niya 'yung kanyang nasa puso at isip, e di sabihin lang niya."
Pia herself admitted that she believes there is nothing wrong with getting an interpreter for Miss Universe.
“Pwede naman. Kaya nga may option eh. I don’t think they would give you the option of using an interpreter if they thought that it would ruin your chances. Hindi naman ganun ‘yung Miss Universe. Whatever you’re comfortable with, you do that.” The current Ms. Universe stated.
