Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is known not only for creating the ultimate social media website but also for his philanthropic work. So it comes as a surprise to know that the Facebook CEO used to be an atheist.

According to a report by Inquirer, Zuckerberg is now claiming that "religion is very important." To quote from his official Facebook post, the Facebook CEO stated "Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah from Priscilla, Max, Beast and me!"

He was referring to his wife, daughter, and his pet dog, respectively. Zuckerberg called himself a "non-believer" in the past, a fact that a Facebook user brought up.

The netizen asked, "Aren't you an atheist?"

To which the Facebook founder replied that he wasn't and he was actually raised Jewish. However, he went through a phase wherein he had a crisis of faith. Nowadays, he believes that religion is very important.

He didn't reveal any specific details about how he actually went through this revelation, but last August, he said that he had a positive attitude towards religion. This happened after he met the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis.

Zuckerberg stated that the meeting was something he'll never forget, as he claimed that he felt the warmth and kindness emanating from the Pope and how the pontiff deeply cared about people.

Priscilla, his spouse, is a Buddhist, which has had an influence on his life. Zuckerberg said that Priscilla asked him to offer a prayer from her.

In another Facebook post, the CEO is shown kneeling in front of the Wild Goose Pagoda, a Buddhist landmark found in Xi'an, China. He said that he wants to have a deeper understanding of Buddhism.
