Three decorated policemen from Quezon City Police District were arrested because of bribing a suspect in an entrapment operation.
According to Inquirer, Santos was honored 14 times in nearly two decades of service and was even given the Medal of Excellence. Merin was honored 54 times since 1997 together with the Medal of Service in Luzon. Dazo was honored 12 times since he started as a policeman last 2002, even winning the PNP Badge of Honor.
Initial Reports claim that policemen PO3 Joseph Merin, PO3 Aprilito Santos and PO3 Ramil Dazo went to Ayugin St. Barangay Talipapa. They went straight to the residence of Iluminada Leetiong to serve a warrant of arrest for her son, Raymond Leetiong, due to qualified theft and violating Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
Though the warrant of arrest was legitimate, the three policemen were arrested together with a civilian identified as Gaudencio Yu as they did not coordinate with their chief making their act unauthorized.
Mrs. Leetiong said that the three policemen asked for a bribe of P120,000 for the release of her son, then and there. However, after their negotiation, the amount decreased to P70,000.
Mrs. Leetiong then asked permission to find money but what she really did was go to the police station and file a complaint against the three policemen.
Merin, Dazo and Santos will face charges for robbery, extortion, and grave misconduct.
