Exclusive - Gunmen Invade a Home And Shoot a Mother of Five - Right in Front of her Children.

On the evening of February 20, four gunmen kicked down the door of a residence in Marikina City then shot and killed a mother of five while she was cradling her youngest child.

In the report by the Inquirer, the incident took place at a home in Barangay Malanday, Marikina City when four suspects invaded the home of Michelle Mergillano and her family.

The suspects found Mergillano cradling her youngest child and took it from her arms before pointing their weapons at her. According to the children’s testimony, the hitmen dropped the infant on the floor and shot the mother four times.

The unknown hitmen warned the children to “Stay back, kids. Don’t get mixed up in this or we’ll get blamed for it, too.”

Eight-year-old “Bea” recalls how she begged the hooded attackers to spare her mother’s life, but her pleas went unnoticed.

“I have many siblings!” the girl remembered saying, “Nobody will look after us!”

A relative of the victim, whose name was withheld, believes the gunmen were probably looking for husband Bernard as well. Bernard, a ‘binatog’ snack seller, was on the roof of their home when the attack took place.

The same relative said the couple was a pair of drug users who had refused to surrender to the police “Oplan Tokhang” anti-drug campaign. The local barangay’s anti-drug abuse council also claims that Bernardo ran a drug den from his home.

The eldest child, 13-year-old “James” said that he is angry at his father for introducing his mother to drugs over two years ago.

“I’m angry at Papa,” he said.

The children recovered two of their mother’s teeth while cleaning the crime scene.

After the incident, Bernard was briefly spotted at his wife's funeral which was held at Hyacinth Street near their home. He placed flowers at her coffin before vanishing again.

The five Mergillano children will be cared for by relatives after their mother’s burial on March 2.

Marikina Police has reported that three more suspected drugs users were killed by unknown shooters on that same night.

The names of the three victims were Emilio Lamsen III, Bernie Subungan and Michael Vitalico. These three along with Mergillano were on Barangay Malanday ’s local drug watch list.

Our prayers go out to those affected by this tragedy.
