It’s not easy to become a refugee and it’s especially not easy to lose your loved ones among the chaos and the destruction. Here is the story of a man who got separated from his wife because of a war that was going on in Sudan.
Little Things reported that in 2012, a man named Dyan and his wife Alik, together with their children, left their village from Sudan. They decided to settle in a refugee camp in Africa. It was a chaotic moment for them and in the midst of it all, Dyan got himself separated from his family.
He wasn’t able to retrieve his marriage certificate or the written evidence that he got married to his wife. Due to this, Alik was processed in the camp as a single mother while Dyan, her husband, got moved to the bottom of the resettlement list as a single man.
Being a single man meant that you don’t get to be chosen for a resettlement in the United States at least through demographics. It was the country that they were supposed to settle in.
Alik got in Fort Worth, Texas and found out that she was pregnant with their third child. At that time, she had no clue whether she would see her husband again or not.
Two moms from Fort Worth volunteered to a refugee resettlement agency, Catholic Charities, and took care of Alik and her children. Eventually, they were able to form an unbreakable bond with the refugee woman. They even helped her when she already gave birth to her third child.
Dyan, the husband, meanwhile, was stuck in a refugee camp. Years passed and he wasn’t able to see his four-year-old son, who was already eight at that time. The third child, who was already three-year-old, remained unaware of Dyan’s existence.
The two moms who took Alik in, Molly and Mary Claire, did everything they could to initiate a reunion between the wife and her husband Dyan. They consulted with social workers, submitted the required papers, and even talked with politicians and immigration attorneys.
Four years after and their efforts finally paid off Dyan finally met his wife and children. See the whole touching incident here:
