What would you do if you accidentally received $4.6 million dollars in your bank account?
Malaysian student Christine Jiaxin Lee found herself in this predicament. She was surprised after $4.6 million was deposited in her Westpac Bank account.
Without any hesitation, Lee went on a shopping spree and lived in luxury for 11 months. The 21-year old started her suddenly lavish life by renting a penthouse apartment in Sydney's affluent inner west district. Her monthly rent amounted to $3,000. She also frequented expensive salons for regular hair treatment and dressing.
Lee then went on a shopping spree. One of her receipts showed a total of $220,000 in just one visit to a Christian Dior store in Sydney. When the police raided her lavish apartment, they found over a hundred handbags, piles of clothes, sunglasses, shoes, scarves, diamond jewelry, mobile phones, cashmere cushions, key chains, and pictures of Lee showing off her new acquisitions.
A picture of her Westpac Bank statement showed about $1.1 million worth of spending in just three months. The final count showed a total of $2.4 million spent on luxury items.
When police started questioning her, Lee booked a flight back home to Malaysia but was arrested before she could leave Sydney Airport. During her interrogation, Christine said she thought that her parents deposited the money for her to do as she pleased.
Despite her alibi being shaky, a court magistrate said that Christine cannot be made to pay for all her purchases. In the first place, Westpac Bank did not order her to return the money. Her bank account was frozen but a considerable amount of the money had already been consumed. Lee claims that only $4,000 is left from the money.
Lee is currently out on bail pending her trial. Still, the question remains: Will her case hold water and will Westpac Bank still cover the entire amount?
