Exclusive - A Giant Oarfish Was Found in Southern Leyte After the Earthquake Last Night! Is This A Sign of The Upcoming 'Big One'?

It has been said that oarfishes can actually predict an earthquake. These creatures are a large, greatly elongated type of fish of the family Regalecidae.

They are usually found in temperate to tropical oceans, yet are rarely seen. Their name is believed to be in reference to their highly compressed and elongated bodies.

When an earthquake struck Surigao del Norte last February 10, 2017, residents claimed that two days prior the incident, they saw a ten-foot-long dead oarfish off the coast of Agusan del Norte.

This led to the belief that oarfishes (or any other sea creatures, for that matter) that appear in shallow water may be an indicator of earthquakes to come.

According to ABS-CBN News, Rachel Grant, a lecturer in marine biology, said, “It’s theoretically possible because when an earthquake occurs there can be a build-up of pressure in the rocks which can lead to electrostatic charges that cause electrically charged ions to be released into the water.”

In Japanese folklore, an oarfish are considerd as nature’s prophets of doom.

In light of last night’s earthquake, Peanut Daily reported that an oarfish was found on the shores of Talisay, Libagon, Southern Leyte.

The original photos were shared by Lovella Elejorde in ABS-CBN’s ‘Bayan Mo, Ipatrol Mo’ program. According to the residents, the oarfish was alive when they saw it on the shore. However, it eventually died.

The oarfish was female and was estimated to be around 14.4 feet long and around 1.2 feet wide.
