The ‘madlang people’ and the judges of ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan’ had a great time watching one of yesterday’s performers on ‘It’s Showtime’. One of the judges even knew one of the contestants. It seems that things have come full circle.
Eva Castillo, a middle-aged woman, sang Shirley Bassey’s ‘Tonight I Give The Greatest Performance Of My Life’ and captivated the audience with her powerful voice. Before the verdict of yesterday’s competition was revealed, the judges had to give their professional comment as fellow singers.
One of the judges, Ogie Alcasid, mentioned that he knew Eva Castillo from back in the day. He said that she still had the greatness in her voice that he witnessed long ago, and that her performance on stage was a culmination of the all challenges she faced in her life.
“Nand’on pa rin ‘yung hagod eh. Feeling ko nga mas magaling ka pa kay Regine ngayon eh.” Ogie commented.
Castillo was one of the greatest competitors of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez – Ogie’s wife. Regine and Eva grew up battling each other, with Evas often coming out on top. A couple of years ago, Eva went viral after a netizen posted about her condition – she was unfortunately diagnosed kidney cancer.
“Proud ako na kilala kita. Hindi lang dahil napaka galing mong mang-aawit, pero ang galing mong tao.”
Castillo won yesterday’s contest and was crowned the new ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan’ champion for the week. She won with an average score of 92%.
