Mental illness is common in our society. Though others dismiss this as just sadness and overthinking, this type of disease attacks at least 450 million people, or 1 in 4 persons, worldwide.
Though physical symptoms are rarely seen as compared to other illnesses such as the normal fever or even cancer, mental illness affects the brain by messing up with its chemical compounds.
The most common types of mental illnesses include depression and anxiety. Having both may lead to even more complications since the disorder targets the part of the body which is capable of thinking.
Gemma Walker is an example of a girl who has depression which eventually led her to become both anorexic and bulimic.
Due to the unrealistic standards of society, Gemma became a victim of her own mind pushing her to think that she is not good enough.
Upon seeing all the beautiful girls plastered on magazines, films, television, and on the internet, Gemma decided to completely change the way she looks in order to be accepted by the majority.
The young woman suffered from anorexia, an eating disorder where the person constantly desires to keep of their weight despite weighing abnormally low on the scale. DEven her own parents weren’t able to rid Gemma of the disorder since they can’t control her way of thinking. All they could do was watch Gemma every day to make sure she’s still alive. Her father, Steve said that he and his wife would “sit on the ground next to her bed just to be with her.”
As her strength starts to deteriorate, Gemma revealed that she is also suffering from depression. This caused her to regularly cut her wrists just to keep her mind away from the sadness she feels. Gemma said: "I felt numb. The days just melted into each other and I wished each day by, hoping that I would just pass peacefully in my sleep."
Eventually, Gemma started to eat but she was far from getting better. The girl ate uncontrollably, consuming up to 6,500 calories of food within 20 minutes.
Still, she pushed herself to get better and as if a miracle happened, she eventually found her way to recovery. With the help of her family and friends, Gemma started to eat healthier and move more to shed all the body weight she gained from being bulimic.
After her 8-year long battle with different disorders, Gemma now has her own line of skincare products and helps out to inspire people with eating disorders by encouraging them and sharing her story.
