It is not every day that we encounter people doing acts of pure kindness for others out of good will, and not just because they wanted to be recognized or be praised. Such is the case of this parish priest in Basilan, Mindanao.
According to Rachfeed, Father Joel Silagpo is a priest who sells fish in order to have a church renovated. The church that he aims to develop is the small congregation of San Antonio de Padua of Sta. Clara.
It is located in the middle of Lamitan City, Basilan and surrounded by Muslim communities. It was said that the wooden church was built in the 1980’s and has become dilapidated.
Father Silagpo, who is the parish priest assigned to the church, have decided to have the worship place be renovated so that it could be restored to its good old glory.
However, the parish does not have much funding and there are only a few people who actually attend the masses. This makes it difficult for Father Silagpo and the church personnel to collect enough money for the church’s development.
It was said that Father Silagpo decided to sell fish when he bought fish in Bagsakan. A thought came to him--what if he sells fish to raise funds for the church?
The source cited that the parishioners initially thought the priest was joking when he told them his plan. He said, “I told them, I can sacrifice for the church because our church is dilapidated and we need to source out funds.”
In God’s grace, the parishioners eventually took him seriously and they were able to donate him 7,000 pesos for his initial capital. After a week, Father Silagpo got to pay the borrowed money.
In his fish-selling venture, the priest earns at least 1,000 pesos per day. During the people’s paydays, he is able to earn as high as 3,000 pesos.
When some of his Muslim friends found out about his efforts, he was able to receive a “special price” from them.
If you want to help Father Silagpo, you could deposit your monetary donations to the Philippine National Bank of Basilan with the account number #53-493-680002-8.
What do you think about Father Silagpo’s efforts? Are you amazed by his effort and perseverance?
