With two Russian teenagers plunging themselves to their deaths jumping off a 14-story building in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia and over 130 other suicides, news over the alleged sinister game behind the suicides raised dread among netizens and mental health advocates.

Various internet tabloids claimed that the "Blue Whale" online game is a sinister suicide game. News broke out on February 2017 which linked the deaths of 100+ people in Russia over the past six months to the game.

The mechanics of the game is to follow a set of instructions that will be sent to the player by the curator. Over the course of 50 days, the player must accomplish every task given by the administrator. On the 50th day, the player's final task to win the game is to end his own life.

The origin of the story, newpaper Novaya Gazeta said 15-year-old Yulia Konstantinova and her friend 16-year-old Veronika Volkova have caught the attention of state investigators in Krasnoyarsk, east of Moscow after their mysterious suicides. Reportedly, Konstantinova posted a photo of the blue whale, following it with the word 'End' in her page in Vkontakte. Volkova, also wrote something similar. "Sense is lost... End," she wrote.

"We have counted 130 suicides of children that took place between November 2015 to April 2016. Almost all these children were members of the same internet groups and lived in good, happy families," reported Novaya Gazeta.

The Russian outlet claimed that the hundred of suicides occured over a span of six months. Additionally, the people involved in the suicides are believed to have been part of the one social media network and online community, VK.com. The site is where Konstantinova and Volkova reportedly posted their cryptic messages regarding 'the end'.

Novaya Gazeta believed that atleast 80 of the reported suicides are caused by the game 'Blue Whales'.

However, Radio Free Europe claimed that none of these suicides are proven to be linked to the online community.

"But while the Russian-language Internet is groaning with profiles of young people playing or seeking to play the game, shocking photographs of self-injury like cutting marked with the game’s hashtags, and purported links to teen suicides, not a single death in Russia or Central Asia has been definitively tied to Blue Whale," wrote Radio Free Europe.

Website Meduza seconded Radio Free Europe saying, "it is quite possible to assume an inverse relationship – a teen becomes part of a group due to the fact that it is contains people who struggle with suicidal thoughts."
